Sammanfattning

Background: The roles and responsibilities of nurses in rehabilitation seem to be unclear and less attended to, in spite of the fact that they are the largest professional group in rehabilitation. The purpose of this study was to describe nurses’ functions in rehabilitation as it is experienced by nurses who work in nursing homes with elderly residents as a major group. Phenomenological method was applied and data was collected by means of in depth interviews with six experienced nurses, representing different institutions. Four significant functions were identified: 1) the safeguarding function of maintaining a holistic perspective in the rehabilitation process, 2) the relational function, 3) the function of facilitating user involvement, and 4) the node function in the multidisciplinary team. Nursing in rehabilitation involves the act of balancing many areas of demand in order to safeguard that rehabilitation efforts are relevant, consecutive and applied in respect of the patient’s resources.
