Background: The laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (LRYGB) is the most widely used obesity surgery worldwide and in Denmark as well. The mean hospital stay is 2-4 days. Purpose: As patients are demanding shorter hospital stays, the aim was to investigate whether it is safe and secure for patients to be discharged the first day after LRYGB. Method: One hundred patients were consecutively enrolled in the study from August 30, 2010 to March 30, 2011. Data collection included age, sex, BMI, duration of surgery, time of completing the surgery, length of stay, Postanaesthesia Discharge Scoring System, data from telephone interviews the day after discharge and readmission within 10 days. Results: Eighty-four patients were discharged the first postoperative day and 16 patients had a prolonged length of stay. Readmission within 10 days after surgery occurred in a total of 8 patients. Conclusion: A majority of patients undergoing LRYGB can be discharged safely the first postoperative day with a minimal risk of postoperative complications and readmission.
