Sammanfattning
Health technology assessment (HTA) is a systematic evaluation of effects of health care technologies. Its main purpose is to inform technology-related policymaking in health care. Four randomised, controlled trials (RCT) and five non-randomised, controlled cohort studies that reported the effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on chronic non-healing diabetic foot ulcers were identified in our HTA. A higher rate of complete ulcer healing in the HBO groups was observed, with about two out of three completely healed ulcers, an almost doubled healing rate compared to conventional therapy. No difference in the amputation rates was found. However, the studies were too small to adequately address the issue. There were no differences in quality of life scores with HBO treatment. Cost-effect analyses indicate that adjunctive HBO for diabetic foot ulcers is cost-effective compared to standard care. HBO is effective as an adjunctive therapy in treating non-healing, chronic diabetic foot ulcers.
