Sammanfattning

Sweden has the highest abortion rate among the Nordic countries, 20.9/1?000 women, about 38?000 annual induced abortions compared to 110?000 births. There is limited knowledge about women and especially about men who are involved in an abortion. The overall purpose of this review was to present trends in abortion rates, women’s and men’s experiences and needs related to abortion care, as well as important aspects related to the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. Four out of ten women seeking abortion, and one third of men involved in an abortion, have experienced at least one previous abortion. Repeat induced abortion is associated with socio-economic vulnerability. Abortion care should be continuously evaluated from a patient perspective and with focus on preventing another unwanted pregnancy. Public health policy measures are important to reduce inequality between groups, which also applies to the prevention of unwanted pregnancies.
