Sammanfattning

Since over 10 years analysis of anabolic androgenic steroids has been utilised in Sweden not only in sports but also in forensic testing, work-place testing and addiction medicine. Today the problem of AAS use in Sweden is wide-spread and classified as a problem for the society. Seizures made by customs indicate that substantial amounts are being imported for illegal market. It has been estimated that the number of AAS users in Sweden is over 10?000. Analytical results from samples taken from athletes and analysed in the Swedish Doping laboratory in Stockholm and in WADA (World Antidoping Agency) shows that about 1% of the tested athletes were positive in AAS. Results from over 16000 urine samples analysed at the Pharmacology laboratory under the period 2006–2012 and showed that 11% of the tested samples have been positive in AAS. Of the positive samples 75% contained only one AAS substance while the remaining 25% contained more than one. The analysis of AAS has been complicated and demanding but recent methodological developments will enable more cost-effective methods to be used in the future.
