Sammanfattning

Psoriasis is a common inflammatory skin disease with a prevalence of 2–3 % in Sweden. Within the past decades increased knowledge of the disease has led to a more profound understanding of psoriasis as a genetically determined systemic inflammatory disease rather than a solely inflammatory skin disorder. Recent research demonstrates an association between moderate to severe psoriasis and cardiovascular diseases, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension and hyperlipidemia. These comorbidities often remain undiagnosed and untreated in patients with psoriasis. Appropriate treatment of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors with early intervention such as patient information and life-style changes may reduce mortality in patients with moderate to severe psoriasis. In order to identify patients at risk the implementation of screening guidelines into Swedish healthcare is suggested.
