Sammanfattning

The Anti Doping Hot-Line, funded by the Swedish government and managed by trained nurses and clinical pharmacologists, works to inform about and counteract the misuse of doping substances and its consequences in Sweden. The Hot-Line has received more than 40 000 calls since the start in 1993, with a decrease in recent years, paralleled by increasing internet contacts. Information provided by our contacts is systematically registered and analysed. Most questions concern the abuse of anabolic androgenic steroids (AAS). Self-reported concomitant abuse of AAS and narcotics has increased from 3% of contacts in 2005 to 14% in 2012. The most commonly reported side effects are aggressiveness (mainly reported by relatives), depression, acne, gynecomastia, anxiousness, erectile dysfunction and sleep disorders (reported by the abusers themselves). There is a great need for information concerning diagnosis and treatment of steroid abusers in health care today, and there is also a lack of specialized units for this treatment.
