Sammanfattning

Medline: a description of the database and its origin The paper describes how a modest military medical library developed into the world’s largest collection of medical literature. Both the expansion and the effective cataloguing was to a great extent the work of the librarian Colonel John Shaw Billings. He created Index Medicus and the MeSH-system. This indexing system is based on Medical Subject Headings summarizing the content of an article. In 1956 the library was transferred into National Library of Medicine (NLM). Index Medicus was computerized and became Medline. Since 1997 Medline is available for anybody by way of PubMed, the searchable database. Medline holds at present more than 20 million citations of scientific medical articles.
