Sammanfattning

By conducting a multidisciplinary Child Death Review and Serious Case Review in response to a child’s death or injury, preventable factors can be elicited and lessons learned in order to prevent similar incidents. In Sweden, in accordance with a national legislation enacted in 2008, child death reviews are restricted to child fatalities associated with a completed criminal investigation. The National Board of Health and Welfare reviewed 19 cases involving 22 child fatalities during the period 2006–2011. During the same period, 549 child deaths were recorded in the Cause of Death Registry as due to external causes, of which 34 were recorded as assault and 35 due to injury of unknown intent. In addition, 338 deaths were due to causes that were incompletely defined or unclear. A Child Death Review of these cases would likely increase the potential to elicit preventable factors and implement improved preventive public health policies. Cases in which children are seriously harmed due to maltreatment or neglect should also be included in a multidisciplinary Serious Case Review.
