Belching is a physiological behaviour, but when this is excessive overall, in terms of both frequency and intensity, it becomes a disability. If there are no other symptoms, it is possibly caused by supragastric belching; a behavioural problem, which can be treated by a speech therapist, after examination by video fiberendoscopy. We report of such successful treatment of a man with longstanding, socially disabling supragastric belching. The condition was monitored with patient VAS scores as well as voice recordings of the patient reading a standard text. Thus the number and intensity of belchings could be objectively compared over time.
