Sammanfattning
Aim: The aim of this study is to illuminate nurses’ and student nurses’ experiences of the meaning of nurse teachers’ presence in clinical
practice.
Background: The justification for this study is that no empirical studies related to the meaning of teachers’ presence in a densely populated
surgical ward have been conducted.
Design: The transcribed interview texts were subjected to a phenomenological-hermeneutic interpretation.
Method: Four registered nurses and four student nurses were interviewed about their experiences of nurse teacher’ presence in an orthopaedic
hospital ward.
Conclusions: Findings in this study indicate that the nurse teacher has an important role in clinical practice, as well in a densely populated
ward. The most salient point revealed by the study is the great responsibility the nurses felt for supervising and especially for the evaluation of
the students. This was particularly in cases where they had to fail the students. Both nurses and student nurses expressed that the students
acquired more knowledge when preparing nursing together with nurse teacher from the university college. Nurses supervising students in
clinical practice need to share the great responsibility with the nurse teacher.
