Sammanfattning

There is a growing number of older people who use drugs, and the need for drug-related expertise and efficient interventions are increasing in the municipal sector. Competent staff and effective interventions are critical for the quality of future care services for older drug users. There is relatively little research on the elderly, aging and substance use in context. One of the objectives of this study was to increase the knowledge about drug use and drug-related need for help among the elderly. Another objective was to examine to what extent employees in municipal care services have knowledge about substance abuse. A qualitative method is used and data were collected through semi-structured interviews. Eight nurses were interviewed. Data is analysed in a combined approach of theme and person-centred analysis. The study shows that the care sector is facing major challenges when meeting elderly patients who use drugs or have substance abuse-related injuries. It also shows that nurses who have worked with patients have acquired experience based knowledge about substance abuse. However, little focus on elderly and substance abuse in the municipal care limits the opportunities to identify, prevent and treat drug-related problems among the elderly.
