Children who are unwilling to eat, despite adequate oral skills, represent a new aspect of eating problems within childcare settings. What is causing the unwillingness to eat is not clear and a better understanding of these disorders is of importance for the development of efficient prevention and treatment strategies. In this article, we discuss current research that may provide new approaches to the understanding of unwillingness to eat in children. We also describe a treatment model in which the parents learn to offer food consistencies and tastes according to the child’s preferences, together with verbal encouragement, a treatment model that has been proven a successful strategy in increasing the children’s interest in food and eating.
