Sammanfattning

Leadership is an important tool in supporting and motivating nursing personnel to give good care. Leadership influences the personnel’s health and well-being, which impacts the quality of care. It is thus important to apply health promoting leadership in nursing. The aim of the study was to describe nursing staff’s views of health promoting leadership and of the possibilities of leadership to influence the occupational health of the staff. Three focus group interviews with nursing staff (n=17) were carried out and analyzed with manifest content analysis. Conditions for health promoting leadership were understanding, courage and ethical encountering. The possibilities for leadership to impact the occupational health of nursing staff were through caring and interaction. Lack of morality and interaction as well as hiding behind a title characterized not health promoting leadership. The results show that from a personnel point of view leadership plays an important part in creating a good atmosphere at the workplace and holds a key position considering the health and well-being of the personnel. Through successful interaction, flexibility and ability to truly see the needs of the nursing staff the leader may influence occupational health and well-being of the staff. The results indicate that nurse leaders need education and counselling in ethical issues, encountering and interaction in order to develop health promoting leadership.
