Sammanfattning
In this systematic review, elderly refers to individuals over the age of 64, whereas fragile elderly refers to those over the age of 64 and living in a nursing home.
Anticholinergic medicines are effective in treating urine incontinence in elderly men and women. In elderly women, urinary incontinence can be improved through pelvic floor training or by surgical intervention using the intravaginal sling procedure.
Risks for side effects accompany both surgery and anticholinergic medication.
For the fragile elderly, it has been hypothesized that improved basic care could reduce urinary incontinence, but very few scientific studies have yet addressed this question. Research is also limited regarding prophylactic, palliative and curative treatment options.
There are ethical considerations in study design and recruitment of patients since the patients may not be autonomous.
