Sammanfattning
More than 11,000 next of kin responded to a questionnaire from the Swedish Stroke Register (Riks-Stroke) during 2010–2012. Half of the next of kin were carers, whose own life had been changed by being bound to stay at home providing considerable help and support to the stroke patient. Many of those <65 years of age had reduced their working time or left their work. This younger group was less well informed about where to apply for support from the community. The role of next of kin as a carer has become more crucial as disabled
people are expected to stay at home. Therefore, the carers must be better recognized within health care. During the acute phase of the disease, stroke teams may start planning for service, care, and support of the next of kin. It is recommended that health and well-being of the carer should be followed up also in other quality registers.
