Sammanfattning
The number of cancer patients who need palliative care is currently increasing, and many cancer patients who need pain relief would like to be offered such treatment in their own homes. The purpose of this study was to examine how nurses experience competence in pain management for cancer patients living at home. Data were collected using semi-structured, individual interviews with ten nurses who worked in three different districts, home health care. The interviews were analysed by means of Thagaard’s (2002) analytical method. The nurses were generally satisfied with the job they do for cancer patients living at home, but to be able to offer cancer patients the best pain relief was a major challenge. Expertise in community health services and specialist health services varies. To allow more cancer patients a good and worthy treatment in their own home, the home health care should focus more on symptom relief and good communication between patients, relatives and healthcare professionals.
