Omsorg under tvang - En narrativ studie av pasienters fortellinger om tvang og psykisk
helsevern
Sammanfattning
The use of coercion complicates alliances and patients’ experience of care. A key question is in which situations patients find coercion acceptable and how health professionals can help to prevent negative experiences.
This was a qualitative study with a thematic narrative design. Nine participants, who had been hospitalized with psychosis disorders, were interviewed about client participation, treatment and recovery processes, centring on patients' understanding of treatment and interaction with staff.
Patients could accept the use of coercion in some cases, but argued that coercion should be reduced to a minimum. Negative experiences were characterized by a lack of influence, no freedom of choice and unnecessary force. Positive experiences were feeling that one’s own needs and interests were respected.
We conclude that care in mental health must focus on communication that allows different opinions to be expressed, explained and respected. Coercion should be carried out as considerately as possible, and followed up with dialogue so that all parties involved can learn from the incident.
