Sammanfattning
PURPOSE: This qualitative study sought to illustrate factors that
may affect patient participation in a Norwegian acquired brain injury
rehabilitation context.
METHOD: Data were collected through retrospective in-depth interviews
with five patients and through focus-group interviews with ten
health professionals.
FINDINGS: Five indicators for patient participation were identified
from the empiric material: Professional human resources (how multidisciplinary
team members’ different roles affect patient participation),
community (how formal and informal arenas either may facilitate or
inhibit participation), comprehension (the way professionals are able
to meet and understand the patients’ situation), predictability (based
on sufficient information) and flexibility (differentiated approaches to
meet the patients’ abilities and desire to participate).
CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate relational conditions as a
foundation for patient participation. It highlights how informal arenas
contribute to relation building between the parties. One characteristic
of patient participation within rehabilitation following acquired brain
injury is the degree of participation changing over time. The study
demonstrates individual preferences - meaning professionals have to
adjust to each person. From the patients’ point of view, participation
is about having control by getting information, being listened to, and
having influence.
