Sammanfattning
In 1955 the company Procter & Gamble released their stannous fluoride toothpaste «Crest» in
USA, which was an immediate success, and was recommended by American Dental Association.
However, in 1965 the monofluorophosfate (MFP) toothpaste was introduced on the international
market. This was a sophisticated product, which contained only bound fluoride, released in the oral
cavity by phosphatases during toothbrushing. MFP had a high cariesinhibiting effect, and in fact
started the caries decline. Both stannous fluoride and MFP are expensive fluoride sources.
This changed in 1982 when it was shown that inexpensive NaF can be employed as the fluoride
source when only a new abrasive, silica, were used, as this abrasive does not interact with fluoride.
Silica is furthermore known as an extremely efficient abrasive, and thus provides a clean, plaque-
and pellicle-free enamel, which allows the fluoride from the toothpaste to react with it.
