Sammanfattning
There is great need to improve surgical services in low–middle income countries (LMIC). Groin hernias are common in the world and hernia surgery is one of the most frequent performed operations in sub-Saharan Africa. The preferred technique in high income countries uses a synthetic
mesh. These meshes are expensive and not available to the general population in LMIC. As an alternative, mosquito net with very similar properties to commercial mesh is used in some LMIC. Previous research comparing these two materials is promising, but a large, well-controlled clinical
trial is necessary to give evidence for this practice. This interim analysis evaluates around half of the study material from a large randomized study, comparing commercial mesh with mosquito net in groin hernia surgery in adult men in Uganda. Patients were followed up two weeks and one
year after surgery. The analysis shows no major differences or serious complication that would lead to discontinuation of the study.
