Sammanfattning

Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a life-threatening condition characterised by acute onset of extensive left ventricular dysfunction that cannot be explained by one or more coronary artery occlusions. Despite an apparently increasing incidence world-wide, no evidence based treatment recommendations exist in European or American guidelines. Because takotsubo is potentially self-healing, treatment of these patients should be based on the »primum nil nocere« principle rather than extrapolation of treatment algorithms developed for acute heart failure of different etiology. Inotropic and vasoactive substances should be avoided in the acute phase. In severely decompensated patients mechanical assist devices should be considered.
