Sammanfattning

The main epistemological tension in the history of psychiatry is been between object- and subject-ontological perspectives; in practice whether focus should be on the disease or on the suffering person as subject. The Escalation Plan for Mental Health emphasized the latter, but objectifying is still alive. The article puts forward the idea that the risk of inhumanity in treatment is greatest when the concept of knowledge contributes to the objectification of patients. Both modern governing, rebiologization, medicalization and modern diagnoses can contribute to this.
