About 37,000 invasive procedures are performed each year in Denmark as part of the
exploration and treatment of ischaemic heart disease (Coronary Angiography (CAG) and Percutaneous
Coronary Intervention (PCI)). On the basis of a literature review, current knowledge concerning the
care of patients before and after such invasive interventions is communicated. The article focuses on
procedures performed via the radial artery and describes how the nurse can help prevent
haemorrhaging complications related to the piercing of the artery. It describes how compression
should take place after the procedure and discusses existing knowledge about the selection of
closing mechanisms. The article further describes a possible link between patients' fear and the
development of spasms in the artery. A condition that entails pain for the patient and which
complicates the procedure
