Sammanfattning

Approximately 25-30% of those seeking care from a family physician have, in different studies, been estimated to have mental problems. However, a smaller portion of the patients receive a psychiatric diagnosis. The present study is based on data from 2011 which originates from the VAL databases, Stockholm County Council’s databases for the monitoring and analysis of health care. The results show that, on average, 7% of those who visited a family physician in 2011 received a psychiatric diagnosis, but as many as 20% of the patients received some form of help for mental problems. To a large degree this help consisted of prescribing psychotropic drugs. A small proportion received psychosocial interventions from psychologists etc. Thus, psychiatric diagnoses from a family physician do not seem to be a reliable measure of how many patients are in practice identified as suffering from mental ill-health.
