Sammanfattning
The article describes the initial impressions of the medication system One-Stop Dispensing
(OSD) at a Danish in-patient unit. The patients bring their own medicine and administer and manage it
themselves during their hospitalisation.
Background: For the nurse, the handling of medication is a time-consuming process. The patient role
is changing, and the focus in the health services of today and the future is on patient empowerment.
Method: Patients admitted to an orthopaedic surgery department were asked to procure their own
medicine during their stay. Patients were involved in the process by a nurse or department doctor.
The medicine was examined by the pharmacy staff and was stored in a locked bedside table during
the hospitalisation.
Results: 46 out of 63 patients were, on admittance, being treated with a total of 273 prescription
medicines, of which 196 were procured (72 pct). The bedside table and coded lock worked as
intended for the storage of the medicine.
Conclusion: It was possible for the patients to procure most of their own medicine. Through the
simple and inexpensive modification of the bedside tables, it was possible to test OSD in practice.
The project is now continuing in phase 2.
