Sammanfattning
Ulrikke Eleonore «Rikke» Nissen (183-1892) was the first teacher of nursing and the author of the
first textbook for nurses in Norway. Nursing was also the main subject of the many articles she wrote
in the mid 1880s. The purpose of this article is to elucidate Nissen´s view on nursing and discuss in
what way her thoughts may help understand the uniqueness and identity of nursing as a profession.
The methodological approach is derived from the hermeneutic philosophy of the German philosopher
Hans-Georg Gadamer (1900-2002). Since the time of Nissen nursing has undergone a huge
development regarding nursing knowledge, science and technology. Still, her reflexions on moral
consciousness and quality are profound and open up for interesting questions regarding the
professional experience and the role of humanistic knowledge in nursing.
