Sammanfattning

Being in nature promotes health. This claim is substantiated by presenting biological and historical lines of our relation to nature. We argue that as a consequence of this recognition there exists a range of opportunities for improving mental health services; opportunities insufficiently utilized in today’s healthcare system. Additionally, in Norway we have a collective cultural heritage through our unique relation to outdoor life, providing favorable conditions for succeeding with nature-based mental health work. Lastly we present a new healthcare intervention - friluftsterapi - as an example of how to address mental health challenges in the wilderness in a targeted and professional manner.
