Sammanfattning
Saliva has been for a long time considered an important
diagnostic fluid. Unlike blood and other
body fluids, the use of saliva for diagnostics offers
an easy, inexpensive and painless method for early
diagnosis, monitoring disease progression, and
the effect of therapeutic intervention. However, the
use of salivary diagnostics has been hindered by the
lack of sensitive and specific methods, lack of correlation
between biomolecules in blood and saliva,
and circadian and flow dependent variations of saliva.
Over the last decade, omic technologies have
improved, especially with regard to genomics and
proteomics but also metabolomics. Consequently,
the use of salivary diagnostics in clinical settings is
becoming a reality. The most significant landmark
in salivary diagnostics has been to identify disease
biomarkers and to transfer them from the laboratory
to clinical practice.
