Increasing numbers of newborns who for various reasons fail to thrive, are admitted to the
neonatal unit at Hillerød Hospital. This makes complex and challenging demands of the nurses and
doctors who care for these patients. The families need help in interacting with their newborn in a way
that supports their development, taking as starting point the context in which the child functions, a
context, which also hold the key to change. The article focuses on a form of nursing care consisting
of relationship-building work and communication with the family.
