There is a need for greater focus on oral health among inpatients in order to prevent diseases of
the oral cavity and conditions arising as a result of deficient oral hygiene, since oral health affects
patients' general health and quality of life. It has also been found that nurses lack knowledge of
cleaning agents and implements for providing oral healthcare, indicators of oral health and the effect
of various medications on the oral cavity, which has put patients at risk of severe dental and gingival
problems during hospitalisation. The article draws on research-based knowledge, theory and existing
practices, to shed light on how oral healthcare for inpatients may be carried out and the implements
recommended for providing oral hygiene.
A systematic review revealed that daily tooth-brushing is the best-documented intervention for the
prevention of plaque, caries, periodontal disease and halitosis. In addition, interdental brushes are
effective for cleaning between the teeth. Similarly, dentures, like natural teeth, must be kept clean and
free of plaque and calculus on a daily basis.
The article presents an overview of the most commonly occurring disorders of the oral cavity, and
how oral healthcare for severely ill patients should be provided.
