Sammanfattning
In Sweden, treatment of severe dental anxiety
and phobia in adults can be funded by the National
Health Insurance, following strict regulations
from The National Board of Health and Welfare
(NBHW). These criteria include a multi-professional
treatment team, including dentists and psychologists,
psychotherapists and psychiatrists
with adequate competence. The aim of the pre-
sent survey was to examine how Swedish Coun-
ty Councils/or Regions apply these regulations in the treatment of severe dental anxiety and pho-
bia, and to what extent this treatment is available for patients in Sweden according to the intentions
of the NBHW. A questionnaire was sent to representatives of the County Councils or Regions (n = 21)
and the Public Dental Service (n = 21) in each County Council, with a response rate of 21 and 19
questionnaires, respectively. Treatment of severe dental anxiety and/phobia was provided to some
degree in all County Councils/or Regions, Forskning Svensson et al: Risk för ojämlik vård av extremt

considerable variability concer-
ning the application of the national regulations regarding length of treatment and costs for the
patients, for example. Several County Councils/
or Regions reported a lack of qualifi ed person-el, especially psychologists, psychotherapists or
psychia trists. The need for more formalized qualifications of the treatment team, and better and
stringent interpretation of the formal regulations from the NBHW are proposed. Such changes will
eventually enable good dental care on equal terms for each and every individual with severe dental
anxiety or phobia in Sweden.
