Sammanfattning
Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis is an auto-immune disease characterized
by reduced mobility and articular pain persisting for more
than six weeks in children below the age of 16 where other diseases
can be excluded. There are approximately 1.000 children
with the disease living in Norway. Involvement of the temporomandibular
joints before the end of active growth can cause craniofacial
growth disturbances producing a characteristic
mandibular retrognathism. Because the temporomandibular
joints are a part of the general dentist practitioner’s responsibilities
knowledge about this pathological condition is crucial as
early diagnosis is of great importance for the long-term prognosis.
This review describes terminology, complications, symptoms,
clinical appearance, diagnosis, treatment possibilities and with
information specifically relevant for dentists. The temporomandibular
joint arthritis and treatment often plays a central role for
juvenile idiopathic arthritis patients and is described in greater
detail.
