Sammanfattning

Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) offers preterm infants close skin-to-skin contact with their parents. The intervention has proven favorable for the infants, but how is KMC experienced by parents in a neonatal intensive care unit designed to facilitate continuous KMC? 53 parents (29 mothers and 24 fathers) of 37 infants, with gestational age 23 to 36, answered a questionnaire. In-depth interviews were conducted with the least satisfied parents. Most parents had positive experiences with KMC and described strengthened bonding and attachment. Some parents experienced the staff´s high expectations and lack of consideration of individual needs and opinions as a burden. This was most prominent among parents that were exhausted or traumatized after complicated pregnancies and/or very preterm deliveries.
