Ultrasound proved a highly suitable aid to the placement of peripheral vascular cannulae. This procedure is highly accessible to nurses, especially those already practised in cannulation. The method is low-cost once the ultrasound device has been obtained, and ensures highly accurate cannula placement, and minimizes the risk of causing patient injury. In a number of instances, nurses have achieved viable vascular access in patients for whom it would otherwise have been difficult or impossible to place a central venous haemodialysis catheter. Patients are generally appreciative of the procedure.
