Sammanfattning

The purpose of the study was to review international literature on the relationship between weight and dental caries in primary teeth, and to study association between weight and caries in Norwegian 5-year-olds. A search in PubMed with keywords overweight, obesity and dental caries was performed. Studies in English published 1980 to 2013 of children aged 1 to 6 years were targeted, 53 papers identified and 10 papers included. In the Norwegian study, weight was recorded in kilograms and caries data was recorded by clinical and radiographic examination of 523 5-year-olds. A questionnaire was completed by the parents. Six of ten studies showed no association between weight and caries, two studies reported association between overweight and caries, while two studies showed association between underweight and caries. This distribution was similar regardless of the age of the children and in which part of the world the study was performed. In the Norwegian study, no statistically significantly associations between weight and caries were found neither in bi- nor multivariable analyses. The review of international literature showed inconsistent results regarding association between weight and caries. Further studies are required to investigate association between weight and caries both internationally and in Norway.
