Sammanfattning
Background - Accidental fracture of instruments, injection
needles and suture needles is an adverse event that is extremely
rare in dental practice. The development of disposable
needles and improved metal alloys has significantly reduced
the risk of these injurie.
Case study - A 54-year-old women was referred from her
private dentist to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgery, Aalborg University Hospital for removal of a fractured
injection needle which occurred during administration
of inferior alveolar nerve block. Cone Beam CT scanning
identified that the needle was located medial and cranial to
the mandibular foramen. The needle was removed through a
transoral approach under general anaesthesia. The postoperative
follow-up was uneventful.
Conclusion - Fracture of injection needles is a very rare
complication. The fractured needle was removed under general
anaesthesia. Follow-up after three weeks was normal
without any permanent injuries.
