Advance in magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) technology has made it possible
to detect the presence of inflammation
in the axial skeleton in the absence of
radiographic changes on plain x-ray.
[1-3] This allows for earlier detection of
axial disease in spondyloarthritis (SpA),
and based on these findings axial SpA
can be split into patients with definite
radiographic sacroiliitis on plain x-ray,
also known as ankylosing spondylitis
(AS), and patients with non-radiographic
axial SpA (nr-axSpA) [1, 4].
