Sammanfattning
Purpose: The text discusses life history research as a means of understanding and describing
the experiences of a spouse or significant other with loved ones in nursing homes. Background:
Personal experience inspired a need to explain, comprehend and inspire improved interaction
between the spouse and nursing home staff. Method: Applying Bourdieu`s concepts and life history
research as described by Goodson. Analysis: Life history is a starting point for understanding the
social construction of an individual’s subjectivity. Bourdieu focuses on the practical and theoretical
aspects of the interaction involved in the relationship between an informer and interviewer.
Interpretation of the life-world is performed in light of history. They need to be interpreted by using
several sources and can never stand alone. Goodson looks beyond the personal and practical and
investigates culture and time. A life-history is a combination of personal experience, social
conditions, historical events and cultural references with a focus on the relationship between
personal and social aspects. Conclusion: A person’s life experience is essential to how the
interaction in the nursing home develops. The informers’ habitus affects the interaction. This will be a
key aspect for research in order to analyze and reflect upon in research in order to comprehend and
explain the phenomenon of the relationship between spouses/significant others and staff at the
nursing home.
