Sammanfattning
Safewards is an evidence-based model for reducing conflict, which identifies a number of
conflict-originating factors that give rise to particular flashpoints on psychiatric wards. These have
the potential to trigger conflicts. Once staff are familiar with these flashpoints, they can then influence
the scale of conflicts and reduce them on the ward. In addition, the model is supported by 10 basic,
practice-centred interventions which provide suggestions for how conflicts may be prevented and
reduced in psychiatric units. The intention is for the interventions to improve staff-patient relations
and to create positive and peaceful settings that are conducive to preventing containment and
violence.
The introduction of Safewards has greatly reduced the incidence of violence and containment in
general psychiatric units in London and elsewhere in the UK. Safewards is not a miracle solution.
The prevention of containment and violence requires care and a coordinated commitment on the part
of the staff team unit-wide and considerable management backing.
Safewards has been translated into Danish by staff from psychiatric units in Denmark, and is
available on the Safewards website together with the German, Dutch, Turkish and Finnish
translations.
