Sammanfattning
Background: Most research of sleep in hospitals is of quantitative design and is mainly limited
to patients in acute care settings. Relatively little is known about understanding the sleep experience
of elderly patients in medical wards. Aim: The aim of this study was to obtain insight into how elderly
patients experienced sleep in medical wards at the hospital. Method: A classical grounded theory
design was used in gathering and analyzing data from eight in-depth interviews with eight elderly
patients in two medical wards at a Norwegian hospital. Results: The participants’ main concern was
«sleeping when getting the opportunity». The theoretical code was identified as «navigating between
dignity and dependency» and showed how they solved their main concern. The substantive theory
«stoic redistribution of sleep» explained what they did to solve their main concern by using three
strategies: «adjusting expectations and demands of sleep», «compensating sleep at night during
daytime» and «endeavoring independency by not bothering the staff». Conclusion: The participants
preserved their dignity by taking responsibility for their own sleep without expecting help from the
staff.
