Tilleggseffekten av fotodynamisk terapi ved ikke-kirurgisk periodontal behandling
Sammanfattning
Photodynamic therapy as an adjunct to scaling and root planing in the treatment of periodontal
disease has gained increased attention in the recent years. The aim of this literature review was to
evaluate the clinical effect of photodynamic therapy as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal
treatment. A PubMED search resulted in 37 articles, published in the years 2008 - 2013. Five articles
were included according to the inclusion criteria. The number of participants in the included studies
varied from 16 to 33, and the effect of PDT was evaluated after 6 and 12 months. The control groups
received scaling and root planing (SRP) and the test groups received scaling and root planing with
adjunctive use of photodynamic therapy (SRP + PDT). The following parameters were evaluated:
bleeding on probing (BoP), pocket probing depth (PPD) and clinical attachment level (CAL).
All included studies reported statistically significant reduction in one or more clinical parameters
from baseline to 6 months. Two studies reported no significant differences between test and control
groups, while one study reported statistically significant better results for the test group for all
clinical parameters evaluated, both after 6 and 12 months.
Conclusion: There is little, although some, documentation on a positive adjunctive effect of PDT, but
more long term documentation in larger study populations are warranted.
