Introduction: About a half of all deaths in Norway happens in nursing homes. Health care reforms
and demographic
development are likely to result at nursing homes becoming
even more important arena for care and treatment in the last
phase of life. This lead to a need of expertise building.
Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted with the
purpose to map staff experiences in implementing the integrated care plan Liverpool Care Pathway
and important aspects
of service provision to seriously ill and dying patients and their
relatives. The authors worked out a study-specific survey questionnaire with focus on important
themes in the service to this
patient group; 88 staff members in nursing service participated (s p r in g 2014).
Discussion: This study suggests needs of awareness in
communication with the seriously ill patient and more time
for soothing presence. It also suggests that the palliative care
team should be more active in the consideration of limitation of
life-prolonging treatment. The study calls attention to the need
of greater awareness of what role relatives has and what responsibilities they get when life-
prolonging treatment is considered.
Conclusion: The study makes it clear that it is still need of quality improvement effort to ensure good
quality
