Sammanfattning
Purpose: Stroke rehabilitation has recently undergone
major changes. The aim of this study is to investigate the
needs people with cognitive challenges after stoke have
in different phases of their rehabilitation trajectories, and
whether and to what extent they experience that different
health services helps to underpin them.
Method: The study is based on retrospective qualitative
depth interviews (2010-2011) with nine people who have lived
with mild and moderate effects of stroke.
Results: The study shows that in-patient stay encompassed key requirements for participants; it gave
assurance in a
vulnerable and chaotic situation, contributed to generating
focus, effort, optimism, hope and gave physical progress and
increased independence. The transition home is perceived
as brutal because it turns out that physical progress is not
sufficient to deal with the new everyday life. Participants
experience lacking insight and tools to deal with the cognitive,
emotional and relational challenges fairly quickly actualized
after homecoming.
Discussion: Whether the coordination reform and the
new incentives in the field of rehabilitation in both the specialist and municipal level are able to
develop services that
support this patient group’s needs throughout the course, remains to be seen.
