Sammanfattning
There has been a large increase in the number of drug-related deaths in Swedes
both according to the Swedish General Mortality register and ‘Toxreg’,
which is based on forensically examined deaths. According to Toxreg the increase
is mainly attributed to the prescribed opioids methadone, buprenorphine
and fentanyl but there was also an increase in the number of heroinrelated
deaths, especially in 2014. The increase in opioid-related deaths has
taken place in all parts of Sweden and in all kinds of local communities. This
indicates that the main source of the drugs is the health services. There is
probably a leakage from substitution treatment and from prescriptions of analgesic
opiates. The heroin-related deaths are on the other hand concentrated
to Stockholm and Malmoe. There has been a development from illicit drugs as
amphetamine and heroin to prescribed opioids. This may indicate a Swedish
opioid epidemic similar to the development in the United States
