Schizophrenia and the complex dissociative disorders share many of the same symptoms, but require quite different treatment strategies. In this article we present important overlapping symptoms between the disorders based on empirical findings of similarities and differences between these conditions. The paper presents an overview of Schneiderian first-rank symptoms and dissociative symptoms influencing self-consciousness and identity in both conditions. We also point out areas of further interest for research such as psychosocial and occupational function, neurocognition and prodromal symptoms. In conclusion, we present systematized information to help clinicians with difficult differential diagnosis in cases where criteria based categorization falls short.
