Sammanfattning
Video game addiction (Internet Gaming Disorder) has recently been included as a tentative
diagnosis in official diagnostic systems, has a substantial prevalence, and may cause and
exacerbate other psychosocial problems and disorders. Thus, there is reason to evaluate the
treatment options available. A systematic literature search regarding treatment studies of video game
addiction covering the period January 1, 1980 to December 31, 2014 was conducted using the
databases Pubmed and PsychINFO. In all, 2, 275 articles were identified, of which ten fulfilled the
following inclusion criteria: 1) the article had to be published in English in a peer-reviewed journal, 2)
the study included patients suffering from problems with video gaming, 3) the article described one or
more interventions against video game addiction, and 4) the article contained information or data
concerning the effect of the interventions. Of the ten studies included only four were randomized
controlled trials. Although outcomes generally favored the interventions, several limitations were
identified. These comprise few randomized controlled trials, few studies based on non-
pharmacological approaches, limited number and types of outcome measures, lack of long-term
follow-up data, lack of studies conducted outside South-Korea, and questionable diagnostic
procedures.
