Sammanfattning
Clinical research on prognostic factors for borderline personality disorder (BPD) is mainly based
on female patients, but epidemiological studies indicate that there are more men with BPD than
previously expected. The aim of the current paper is to present research on men with BPD in general
as well as research on prognostic factors separately for male and female patients with BPD. In
general, males with BPD are commonly treated in substance abuse clinics whereas most females
are treated in psychiatric healthcare clinics. Poor prognostic factors for outcome of therapy in both
men and women are substance abuse, severe dissociation and comorbid personality disorders. In
conclusion, few studies have reported prognostic factors for men with BPD as they are not commonly
found in psychiatric health clinics.
