Sammanfattning

At many nursing homes in Greenland, caregivers are generally under-informed regarding appropriate communication with, and care of, frail and care-dependent elderly persons. This is not to say that empathy with elderly persons is lacking, but that it is difficult to put into practice. Geographical constraints and skills deficits mean that elderly persons in nursing homes are living far from close relatives and may be in the care of persons recruited "off the street" who hold no formal qualifications whatsoever. Inevitably, the lack of contact with family, and care-giving that is not necessarily based on the latest knowledge pose challenges. The article discusses residents with dementia and criteria for their care if the goal is quality of life and the ability to cope with everyday life.
