Sammanfattning

Despite the increased understanding, during recent years, of the molecular mechanisms and the brain circuitry involved in the processing of pain, much remains to be understood. Large numbers of both, facilitating and inhibitory mechanisms, interact in most intriguing and complicated ways to modulate the pain processes. With increased knowledge within this field, new targets for treatment are likely to emerge that may not only permit the immediate counteraction of pain but also make it possible to prevent the development of chronic pain.
